Welcome to Green River High School

News/Happenings      Principal`s Page

grhsIt is with tremendous pride that I accept the opportunity to serve the faculty and students at Green River High School.   I understand the traditions of excellence that Green River High School has represented over the years.  With that said, history continues with yet another school year, the year we’ll see the class of 2011 graduate.  Seniors, I wish you the very best senior year. I hope you create memories that last a lifetime and prepare for the future along the way.

The 2010-2011 school year will officially begin August 30. This year will definitely be exciting; many students are already preparing for various activities.  Once again, I expect Green River to be highly competitive academically and in activities, especially compared to the 10 largest schools in Wyoming!  This past year Green River High School ranked number 1 in graduation rate, with 91% of students graduating. Congratulations students, teachers, and parents!

A year ago, Mr. Christensen talked about meeting the district goal of having 75% of students proficient or advanced in language arts and math on PAWS by 2011.   I truly believe this goal is attainable by this year’s juniors, the class of 2012. Good luck!

This year we will see some new programs at GRHS. The most notable will be the addition of an intervention period at the end of fourth hour.  This period creates time for students to receive interventions and enrichment during the school day “in addition” to their standard instruction. Students will be given the opportunity for an extended lunch as an incentive.  Technically, we will initiate the early phases of the Response to Intervention (RTI) framework.  RTI integrates assessment and intervention within a multi-level prevention system to maximize student achievement and reduce behavioral problems.  With RTI, GRHS will identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes, monitor student progress, provide evidence-based interventions, and adjust the intensity and nature of those interventions depending on a student’s responsiveness.

GRHS will also launch a freshman mentoring program. Research has shown a strong connection between students’  “connectedness” to a school and their overall success.  We hope to create a culture in which incoming freshmen and new students have student mentors with whom they can connect.   A perception still exists within the community that incoming freshmen are anxious and nervous when they think about coming to the high school.   As part of the freshman mentoring program, upper classmen will work with incoming students on a monthly basis to help them develop skills which will help them succeed, be safe, and feel welcome.

I look forward to this school year; I know that the level of the staff’s commitment to students of Green River High School is as strong as ever.  We will do our best to prepare students for the future and provide them with positive experiences they will remember for a lifetime.

GO WOLVES!!
